Ink township is located just about 25Km north of Durban city centre. It is home to about +/- 600 000 people, 18% of Durban’s population. It’s a community that still has a large number of households that fall under the low income earner bracket.

INK is an acronym of Inanda, Ntuzuma & kwaMahu. These used to be stand-alone areas but in 2001 they were merged together to form one Township.

  • Inanda is the Oldest of the Areas was Est. In the 1900`s
  • KwaMahu was Est. In 1955 -1966
  • Ntuzuma the baby of the group was built. In the 1970`s

The merger was an intervention by government in trying to address urban & rural poverty. This intervention or Urban renewal programme`s main aim was to increase the levels of investment in economic infrastructure, human capital developments and SMME development in areas that were previously disadvantaged.

Since the Merger the area has seen some sectors development economically. The Tourism industry has been one of those sectors that has been developing, thanks to the great work that has been done by EThekwini Municipality under the Business Support & Tourism department.

Another area of focus that has been a catalyst of economic development in the area, has been the establishment of Shopping centers or Shopping malls in the area. KwaMashu Town Center, Bridge City mall & Dube Village Mall  are those establishments that have certainly brought some relief in the INK area.

Government investment in INK`s electronic communication infrastructures has also helped a great deal in further developing the area. INK now has Two Community radio stations (Vibe FM & Inanda FM).
